AEON And KLOTH CARES Collaborating In Promoting Sustainable Practices, World Environment Day

AEON And KLOTH CARES Collaboration In Promoting Sustainable Practices, World Environment Day | What do you usually do with your unwanted items such as clothes, soft toys, comforters and bedsheets, fabrics, shoes, rugs, handbags, scarfs or even your luggage bags? Did you just throw them away careless they are new or old items, just because you have no storage space and bought a new? I am suggesting that you please don't throw them away but recycle them by sending them to the recycle bins at selected AEON Mall and AEON BiG branches.

We claimed that we love our earth, but do you really love the earth? There is #OnlyOneEarth, hence we all should do our part in protecting our planet to ensure we living in safe and healthy life. I have done my part and will continue to do the same again in my next spring cleaning.

In conjunction with World Environment Day (5 June 2022), AEON CO. (M) BHD (AEON) continues its sustainability efforts by partnering with KLOTH CARES to provide fabric recycle bins at selected AEON Mall and AEON BiG branches.

Some info on fabrics decomposing i.e. Synthetic fabrics (rayon, nylon, polyester, acrylic) Synthetic fabrics like polyester, spandex, nylon, eventually will break down, but the process might take between 20 to 200 years to decompose. Polyester, nylon and other synthetic fibres are a major contributor to the microplastics pollution in the environment. Synthetic fibers take a lot longer since they are predominantly made from plastics. Nylon fabric takes 30 to 40 years, whereas lycra and polyester will take 500+ years to decompose. Isn't that scary?

The recycling initiative was launched at AEON Alpha Angle in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur recently and is one of AEON's efforts in upholding its sustainability statement to protect the environment, biodiversity and ecosystems.

According to Azli Mohamed, Chief Ventures and Sustainability Officer of AEON, “AEON is committed to incorporating sustainable practices into product innovation and bringing positive impacts to communities. We remain committed to enhancing the sustainability practices that we have aligned with the overarching principles of People, Peace and Community,”

“AEON is dedicated to meet the obligations of being a good corporate citizen. We strive to foster greater engagement and collaboration with our communities as we seek to support our stakeholders in achieving their aspirations. In implementing this initiative we are grateful that we are able to work together with Kloth Cares and their founding partners, the Selangor Youth Community (SAY) and Life Line Clothing Malaysia (LLCM) in assisting us to adopt recycling bins to be located in our selected malls,” he added.

A total of 38 recycling bins will be adopted and placed at AEON Mall and AEON BiG branches around Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor. Kloth Cares, whose aim is to keep old clothes out of landfills, will collect and distribute items from the bins to be repurposed into wiping cloth, blankets, rugs, handbags, scarfs and other items, depending on the clothes’ condition.

Through this initiative, AEON is targeting a total of 380,000 kg of recycled fabric to be collected in a year.

The event which was held in conjunction with World Environment Day 2022 was graced by Ummi Kalthum Shuib, Director of Federal Territory (Wilayah Persekutuan), Solid Waste & Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) - Kuala Lumpur & Putrajaya, Nik Suzila, Co-Founder Kloth Malaysia Sdn Bhd and includes a special appearance by Kumika Kufaizul who presented a GoGreen pantun.

This initiative is in line with AEON’s efforts in championing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – 12 and 17 that focus on ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns, as well as strengthening the means of implementation and reviving global partnerships for sustainable development.
